《食蓮者》句解

毛姆的《食蓮者》（ The Lotus Eater）有以下一句： They were all talking their heads off and the cheerful noise was exhilarating。句中的 their heads off是什麼意思？
Head off是指「頭顱落下」。毛姆在短篇小說《來自格拉斯哥的人》（ A Man from Glasgow）裏也用過這成語： I heard the madman simply laughing his bloody head off。 To laugh one's head off和 to talk one's head off都是誇張說法，一指「笑得頭都掉下來」，一指「說話喋喋不休，說得自己頭都掉下來/把人家煩得頭都掉下來」。例如：（ 1） If he sees you wearing such clothes, he will laugh his head off（假如他看見你穿着這樣的衣服，一定笑痛肚皮）。（ 2） I wanted to concentrate on my work, but she was talking my head/ my ear off（我想集中精神工作，她卻喋喋不休，使我不勝其煩）。
毛姆《食蓮者》那一句，是說「他們都談得興高采烈，愉快的聲音令人心情開朗」。《來自格拉斯哥的人》那一句，則是說「我聽見那瘋子他媽的笑個不停」。
《食蓮者》以下一句又是什麼意思？── The Piazza at Capri....is a perfect setting for an opera by Donizetti, and you felt that the voluble crowd might at any moment break into a rattling chorus。
這一句是說：「喀普里廣場絕對適合演出多尼采蒂的歌劇。場上群眾說話滔滔不絕（ voluble），似乎隨時會來個輕快的（ rattling）的合唱。」 Setting是「舞臺布景」。
